What'd I Miss?

My last post (January 1st) was filling in a gap between October and January, not very well, might I add, but filling it nonetheless. I am posting roughly 1.5 months after the last one to send some input your way regarding my thoughts on some stuff that has happened. Bear with me as I try to remember what happened in January and the first half of February of 2010.

Let's see... Well, the Burj Khalifa, formerly the "Burj Dubai," opened for business. It broke the record for tallest building in the world, standing a staggering 2,717 feet (roughly .5 miles, or 828 meters). It has been in the works since January of '04, so it's been a long time coming. If I had the money to fly myself willy-nilly around the world, I'd make sure to drop by Dubai to see this masterpiece.

Apple's iPadAnd how could anyone forget? A 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti. This impoverished island nation has been down on it's luck for quite a while, being one of the poorest nations in the world. As if life wasn't bad enough for them, an earthquake had to go and tear down every building in the bloody capital, Port-au-Prince. As I browsed the pictures, I noticed something missing in every single picture of building wreckage, Rebar. Every building shown was made out of just concrete, no metal support. It makes sense, now that I think about it; how could they afford rebar? But that's probably what caused a lot of the problems; if there was a metal frame for those buildings, most of them probably wouldn't have disintegrated the way they did. But it's just a shame. Death Toll last checked: 230,000. Shame...

On a higher note, Apple announced it's new Apple Tablet: The iPad. For being one of the most anticipated releases out of Apple, it sure got bad press; then again, take a look at this thread from MacRumors.com following the announcement of the iPod. I, personally, am looking forward to this device.

The leading argument I've heard against it is "It's just a giant iPod Touch!" I believe a Twitter user I have since forgotten the name of put it best: "Saying an iPad is just a big iPod Touch is like saying a 30" monitor is just a big 13" monitor." It's true, but isn't that exactly what you want? An iPod touch with a new 10" screen (which is the biggest multi-touch screen on the market) with an advertised 10 hours of active battery life? I know that's what I want. Unfortunately, for a $500 or more price tag, I'm not sure I'll be able to afford it at launch.

Fallout: New Vegas

The thing I'm most excited about, however, happened just but a few days ago. The teaser trailer for Obsidian Entertainment and Bethesda Softworks' newest game hit. What is this game, you ask? Why none other than the sequel to the critically acclaimed game Fallout 3: "Fallout: New Vegas." As the title states, this game takes place in a futuristic Las Vegas, in the year 2280, 3 years after the events that took place in Fallout 3. The game technically doesn't follow Fallout 3's storyline at all, but does elaborate on some things from Fallout 1 & 2. It'll be in the style of Fallout 3, gameplay-wise, and will keep many of the things that made Fallout 3 great. You can find out more here, at the official Fallout Wiki (be aware, there are some spoilers there). The teaser trailer, much in the style of the Fallout 3 teaser trailer, is embedded below.

Another game that was released was Star Trek: Online. It is, of course, a game based around the Star Trek universe, but here's the catch: it's an MMO. You get to fly around on your own starship, named whatever you please, and fight Klingons, Romulans, and many other foes. You can be various different alien species, including Human, Vulcan, Betazoid, Ferengi, or even a Liberated Borg*! Now, I haven't had the chance to play it yet, but my good buddy (former member of AFK for Life: Slipstream) got the collectors edition and has been enjoying the crap out of it. I'll be getting a 10-day trial card from him soon. When I get a chance to play, I'll try to fit a review of it in.

Not much else happened, at least that I can think of. If you can think of something, just tell me so, and I'll put my thoughts on it here, assuming I knew about it.

Oh, one more thing before I go: new movie reviews are up! The Book of Eli, and Daybreakers. Read and enjoy.
